MASK
Project Goal
Utilizing bristol paper to create a mask that embodies an animal, in my case a Mandrill. This mask has to be laser cut out and has to be held together with tabs.
Inspiration
A mandrill is a large, vividly colored primate native to the rainforests of Central Africa. It is easily recognized by its bright blue and red facial markings, elongated snout, and thick fur. Males are especially striking, with larger bodies and more intense coloration than females.
Sketches
Mockups
For my first iterations I wanted to take my 3 main ideas and create them. My first idea (left) was where the user looks through the mouth of the mask, which in theory was my favorite but I couldn’t find a way to execute it that I liked. My second idea (middle) was where I kept the upper and lower jaw but had the user look through where the eyes would be, this version captured the hair and eyes very well but the mandrill’s identity was lost in the jaw. For my third and favorite idea (right) I kept everything above, but I got rid of the lower jaw, this ended up being my favorite look because it was the most clean looking while still capturing the mandrill look.
For my next iterations, my main idea was to start adding tabs to see how to put it together without using tape. I also decided to add sharp edges to the top to make it look like the hair of a mandrill and add a piece for the mandrill’s eyebrow to add more dimension to the side view.
Final Iteration
Illustrator
Here is the final layout of my mask, I brought it into Illustrator to be able to get laser cut.
The red lines is where the machine scores the paper and the white lines is where the machine fully cuts the paper.
For the instructions, I made sure to add a very obvious flow of where to start and where to begin. Another important part that I added was a color coding system so when someone is putting the different parts together they don’t get confused.
